We’ve got 7 inches of snow on the ground down here and forecast overnight is 6 degrees, but the lakes are still open for the moment, and a warmup is in the forecast, so I’m excited to have a chance at open water possibly by the weekend

Same boat here. My lake has been frozen for a week. One open spot in the middle. I have one lake left that is the last to freeze. Caught 88 there a few days ago including 4 walleye. One of my friends lives on a lake where the basin he lives on freezes last. I can call him and if that part of his lake is still open, I know the one I want to fish will be open. It's day to day. That's not me on the pier, I'm the nut in the boat. John

This is one of my favs, caught 34 trout that day. Loving these mild temps as of late! More global warming please.

Just saw this post, Jerry -- reminds me of when a couple of years ago I went to the ramp and decided to put the boat in even though the water -- at the ramp -- was covered in solid ice. The channel, however, was clear, and I could see it...

The ice didn't look that thick. I figured the weight of the trailer would break through and I'd be off fishing. Well, trailer just backed out on top of the ice, and wouldn't break through. Until it did. I didn't realize it at the time but when the motor slammed into the ice, I broke off the skeg and bent the motor pivot pin, which caused it to sit on the transom crooked. That was a mess to fix.

I can't tolerate the cold like I used to, so now I wait until it's at least in the 40s. My hands freeze up pretty bad. But kudos to all you diehards!
