Toledo Bend, TX

Post by Team9nine »

I thought this was kind of neat. If you follow the professional tourney trails at all, then you know Kevin Vandam just won the Toledo Bend Elite event with over 96 pounds of bass. One of his key spots, and the one that gave up two bass over 8 pounds is shown below with two different Navionics maps. The red arrow on the top map is about where his boat was positioned on that spot. What I thought was neat was though you'd never see it mentioned as such, check out how well the spot fits Spoonplugger's/Buck's guidelines for a good structure situation.

You have a series of bars or fingers extending all the way from the shallows (the dark blue island or hump with <10' of water) to the deep. You also have the deepest water in the area right next to this spot as it is bordered by both a creek and river channel to the SW/W (the home of the fish), both of which are at least 35' or greater in depth (sanctuary depths) and actually form a feeder creek junction just a short distance away. Lastly, the one map shows a brushpile marked just off the side of where Kevin was fishing, and one of the largest bass hit after he popped his crankbait through some timber, and then promptly hung him up back in that timber before he was able to free it and land the bass. The point being we know there were also "breaks" on the breaklines and route the fish used between the shallows and the deep water. Kevin caught most of his fish in the deeper water using 8XD and 10XD crankbaits, lures designed to fish 15'-30'.
