Re: hello from northern il

Thanks for your post Dave! I have many excellent pieces of advice from Spoonpluggers. One of the best was "just stick with it!" I was going to stick with it regardless but remembering that comment throughout many tough days on the water really helped. If you have tough days - I promise the...

Re: Happy New Year

Good morning Fran! I woke up this morning thinking about ice out and all the great fishing that Spring will hopefully bring. Granted it's less than 10 degrees here and winter is far from over, but nothing wrong with a New Year to bring a little excitement for a new fishing season! Here in IL we will...

Valpo Velvet Ice Cream Company

I was on business today in Valparaiso, IN and after lunch I stopped by the famous Valpo Velvet Ice Cream Company, owned by Spoonpluggers Mark and Mike Brown. I had the pleasure of visiting in the middle of some serious ice cream being made and it is Old School Cool . These guys know how to do it rig...

Re: Detroit river sturgeon

My heavy non-wire trolling rods are currently 30lb spiderwire flourobraid. I tie my own 17lb seven strand leader with a wire ring on the end that connects to the split ring on the lures.

Detroit river sturgeon

I was asked to put the sturgeon video up. I horsed my fish in as much as possible otherwise it would have taken forever. I knew the tackle would hold up. It helped that I use a split ring directly to the JB2 with no snap. Quite a battle.

Ronnie, To read messages first log-in and the new messages link is on the top left of the screen right next to the logout link. As far as on the water instruction, anytime is good! Seriously, it won't matter. Instruction is less about catching fish and more about the process, so time of year doesn't...

Re: Lake of the week 7-25-13

Thanks Jim. I am going to look at 3 spots to start. #1&#2 being where the map says Lake of Egypt in the middle of the map, and #3 Eagle point. Eagle point offers the eagle point structure and the 2 points on the north/opposite side of the channel, the bigger one me like! A similar situation in t...

Re: How to strain the shallows...

Kraig, I love your question. In my first couple years I had this question in my head constantly, along with speed. I kind of laugh now thinking about starting out around 3mph at a beginning depth, then straining down to 20+ at that speed and starting over at 4/5mph then starting over at 2mph. Oh man...

6-22-13 Kevin Nix first musky

I'm very lucky to know so many helpful spoonpluggers that are so generous with their knowledge. This fish, as many fish I catch, is because of them.

6-2-13 lesson with John Bales

Buck sez...A good Spoonplugger will reach the point where he can walk up to a strange body of water - be it a natural lake or a man-made reservoir - observe the terrain, note the water color, check the weedline, study the weather and come up with most of the answers BEFORE he ever wets a hook. AFTER...

Re: New to spoonplugging repost

Everything can be answered by depth and speed plus weather and water conditions. If you are properly identifying key structure and fishing it in the right manner then you may need to recheck these areas a few different times under different weather conditions. Not sure why you haven't found them on ...
