The odd ball

Frank Hamill used to say there are always one or two fish doing something the rest are not. I guess you could call them stragglers. Anyways, the bluegill always spawn in stages, 2-3-4-5 times a season. They come in by the hundreds right in front of my house for every year and about the time you thin...

Re: Buck had an amazing life - Facts and tidbits

I heard a few of those same stories right from the horses mouth. The one where he bought all those motors and resold them at a good profit. The furniture parts story but at the time he had 5 cents in the part and sold it for a dollar. He said China undersold him and put him right out of the picture....

Re: Another long time spoonplugger

This Denny guy seems like he is still excited about his fishing after a lot of years. Mr. Perry has changed a lot of fishermen's lives for the better. Its nice to see another old dude out there enjoying what he does. Thanks for the post. John

The man Buck Perry

I spend a lot of time looking out over the lake I live on wondering what the fish are doing. Here is the beauty of having spoonplugging knowledge. You no longer have to guess. Weather and water controls it all. What they do daily and seasonally is controlled by weather and water. If you can interpre...

Re: Madison Chain

Do not expect the northern pike to be as it is in Late July, early august. Especially this year. Everything is behind. The depths of the lakes is a dead give away. The deepest is most likely to be the clearest. The two lakes to the south are shallower which tells you that they have the best color Mr...

Livescope

Have had the livescope nearly a year. Still learning and what an amazing tool for getting answers quickly, understanding seasonal movements for all the species. The best information I have gotten so far is Mr. Perry got it all right, without this kind of help. There are still days where I cannot cat...

Re: Rod builders

Neil, I used to buy my rods at Wal Mart. Everything I owned was MH. One day a friend handed me a rod and said to fish with it. What a mistake and an eye opener. None of the rods I made ever turned out like I wished. Not pretty or what I had in mind. Now when I buy a rod, I go to the local tackle sho...

Re: Terry O'Malley on the basics

I know its an old post but Doug Bush said a mouth full about casting a spoonplug on a hard clean bottom. This presentation put a lot of fish in the boat for us back in the days of lakes with water color. Those were the places Mr. Perry preached to fish and we did. Nothing these days would compare to...

Re: Jerry Borst has a Brown Out

Very enjoyable. Sat in the house for two days and that drives me nuts when there is open water. Just too bad to be out there, till today.Brother in law came up and fished from 9 to 5. Water temps dropped from 47 to 40 with ice on one of the channels driving to the ramp. 100 crappies to 14 inches, 4 ...

Re: The good old days

Your lake is a great spoonplugging lake. I like Hogback better than Golden and Little Bower can be hot also but too small unless your casting all day. There is some tournament pressure now but fish are still there. John

Re: The good old days

Nope. Piegon has never had a yellow green color but it is one of the most fun places to fish right at ice out and then again in the late fall. Right now it is plum full of small to med size smallmouth. Will be there in the next few days as soon as the wind gets going . My lake is about 30% open. The...

The good old days

All of my conversations with Terry are about the good old days. Its been a long time since he has been on the water anywhere but longer since he has fished any of the lakes here in the Midwest. I try and tell him that things have changed. He never saw the effects the zebra muscles had in clearing a ...

Re: Migration route

I am in the same frame of mind. The ice cannot go away fast enough. We all go through a stage of learning. New or long time at this, we continue to learn and think on how we can learn more and get better. Lakes change, fish populations change for different reasons. My time in doing this, one thing I...

Re: Migration route

Talk about over looked. As spoonpluggers, we fish for the larger fish of any species. We spend a lot of time on the natural lakes at the base of the weedline waiting for the fish to get active. Like Walk stated, we spend less time in the shallows. Many times the inside edge is shaped just like the o...
