Countour trolling VS straight line passes

We have the shallows, the deep and the inbetween waters. Learning how to troll the shallows is our first step in becoming a spoonplugger. This teaches us how to run lures. In our countour trolling of the shallows, (moving in and out GRADUALLY ) we learn to let the lures tell us what is there. We lea...

New water

The 500 is run for a distance(two to four feet0 and then the 400 (4 to 6) and then the 250(6-9) but by no means check any deeper while doing this unless you see that something is there. You asked how do I start out fishing a new lake. This is how you do it,. Your interpretation of a lake always star...

New lake

This is what a person should do. Study your map, pick out the best structures(seasonally and daily), drive around the lake if you want to check for the best color, put the boat in at an area that wont take all day to get to the fishing waters..... Begin with a 500 and head in the direction of a feat...

There is no substitute for Mr. Perry's trolling rods. They are simply the best tool for the job. End of story. John

Ice out Pike

Brodie, You knew I would respond did'nt you. In all of my years, I have never done what I call find the pike in the process of an actual spawn. Not like you see on tv where some bays are loaded with fish and you pick out the one you want. However the pike and musky can seem to be caught more easily ...

mono backing to wire

The good old hay wire twist will work fine for connecting your wire to anything. When connecting your wire to your backing/ First make a very small loop in the wire and make about 20 tight together twists (haywire twist) and now you can tie your mono backing to your wire. You do not have to worry ab...

wire line

Pat, At times the weeds can get so bad that you just cannot troll. Even when anchoring, finding an open spot to hit is a chore. This is mostly a summer problem when the boats are cutting up the weeds and everything comes floating down the river and messes up our fishing where they come out into Lake...

wire line

Hey Pat, I used the 12 lb test wire for a very brief time and totally discarded it. The number one reason is lost lures due to the constant ripping of weeds. If you do not have the weed problem or many snags in your waters then the 12lb test will be ok for you. If your purpose is to get to the botto...

missing the fish in the fall

Larry, Any time you are not catching fish, you are not carrying your depth control deep enough. If you have checked the shallows, the inbetween depths and some of the deep and still no fish then go deeper. In the fall, many fish movements occur between ten and two so make sure that you are on the ba...

Using the message board as a tool

Jim Shell did a great job setting this board up. Anyone who is interested in becoming a better spoonplugger can ask any question and very likely get the answer from someone on this board. This can be valuable information for a new spoonplugger. When I started back in the early 70's, there was not a ...

The braided scene

Hi Jerry. Ive tried the power pro in the 30 lb test for the muskies. Deb is always complaining that the muskies are too hard to reel in with the wire. I put a roller tip on one rod and now she loves the wire again. The line legnth that you have to let out to achieve the maximum depth is just not wor...
